8-inch has been close to perfect for my Pom who is about 3.5 lbs; perhaps it even fits him a tiny bit loose.I believe 8-inch is with the lead fully CLOSED and then you've got a couple inches of additional give - so it could technically fit a dog with an inch or so larger neck (roughly 8 to 10 inches, but I'd play to 9.5 to be safe).I LOVE that it is thin and light weight -- just as a show lead should be.I saw someone gave this a poor review because they did not measure their dogs neck AND they didn't understand how toy breed show leads should be constructed. You don't want a thick rope that distracts their movement or that is abrasive on their coat. THIS is exactly what is needed.I'm back shopping for show leads because my little one decided to chew and mangle the collar adjustment. After looking around again, I decided to get this same exact one. Its the best one on Amazon for showing. The closed measurement of the martingale is 8 inches, and when opened as far as it will go it will fit over a dog with a 12 inch head circumference. So measure around the widest part of your dogs head, and if it’s between eight and 12 inches this is the perfect show lead for you. I’m glad I got this before my first show with my Chinese Crested bitch. Lightweight and attractive. Also, the handle is small enough that it fits right inside your hand with a proper show hold, and the length is perfect to let a small dog out as far as you need without impeding movement or having too much extra lead. It seems to be made of good quality materials and the price is decent. Only time will tell how it wears.Worked very well for my afghan so I'm a bit disappointed that it tangles her hair to the point that I can't use it. I'm definitely recommend it for short coated dogs.This is a very nice lead, well made and the leather detail is refined. However, the length of the lead from the collar is only 36" and too short for my use, so am returning.Absolutely amazing... my favorite show lead hands down!!I have many dogs, so this will do. I was hoping they would look of a better quality, but they do work well. Will keep and use them as I wasnt looking for an expensive lead anyway. I wouldnt use them in a dog show.Great dog lead!
